Morning chill on the hill

A cold blast of gale-force winds and snowfall descended on Wairarapa on Wednesday night, with motorists yesterday morning witnessing a winter wonderland of snow on SH2 Remutaka Hill Rd. The hill was closed in the middle of Wednesday night during the heaviest snowfall. MetService said snow fell to 400m above sea level. The freezing temperature continued, with the summit weather station not breaking three degrees Celsius all-day Thursday. Waka Kotahi NZTA advised drivers to take extra care and drive to the conditions. Stop-go traffic management was in place with a 30kmh speed limit on the eastern side of the summit due to a slump.
