The weekend’s sold-out Wairarapa garden tour has been labelled a huge success, generating profits in excess of $35,000.
Pukaha Mount Bruce executive officer and garden tour co-coordinator John Gilberthorpe said they had “sold more tickets than they ever had before”.
“It goes towards the conservation at Pukaha Mount Bruce,” he said.
“It is great for all the kiwi and other birds up at Pukaha.
“It is great for the Wairarapa, a lot of the visitors stay over the weekend which is good for the economy.”
Sixteen gardens were on display throughout South Wairarapa, Mr Gilberthorpe said.
He said the gardens that were on display this year were particularly lush and green due to the high rainfall.
The tour, which is in its sixth year, was quite established now, he said.
“People came from all around the country, from Auckland, Cambridge and Hawke’s Bay.
“The feedback has been fantastic.”
Visitors were committed to attending the event regardless of the weather, kitted out with umbrellas and gumboots on the Saturday, he said.
“We are very appreciative of all the garden owners,” Mr Gilberthorpe said.
“We couldn’t do it without them.”
