Anger at cafe theft which targets alcohol

A theft at an iconic country café during the covid-19 lockdown has left police asking for reports of any black-market trade in burgled booze.

Thousands of dollars in alcohol and food was taken from a store at the Tinui Cafe and Bar overnight last week between last Monday at 6.30pm and Tuesday at 11.30am.

RTD drinks and spirits not available in supermarkets were included in the haul.

Police want to hear from anyone who is offered premixed drinks on the black market.

Spirits are not available over the counter in Wairarapa due to the pandemic Alert Level Four lockdown.

Wairarapa area commander Scott Miller said both police and the community want this criminal activity stopped.

“It is hard enough for business owners who are abiding by the lockdown to stay economically viable without the criminal element of our society taking advantage of this situation.”

Miller said any information from the public on a person being in possession of large amounts of alcohol or selling alcohol needs to be reported to police.

Anyone with information on the burglary should call 105, or contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, at crimestoppers-nz.org or 0800 555 111.
