Boxing Day burnout fires up the neighbours

Residents of a usually quiet Masterton street had their peace shattered by an anti-social driver in the early hours of Boxing Day.

At about 1am on December 26, a car exited a property on Cambridge Tce and performed a series of burnouts on the street, smashing into and damaging a kerb in the course of its manoeuvres. It’s then understood the sedan, which was blue or green, then returned to the same address.

Police were called and attended the scene but told residents they were unable to enter the property without a warrant.

One neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he was “glad police turned up but annoyed they proved to be ineffective”.

“Local residents are furious and determined that those responsible will be held to account,” he said.

Residents have since reported the registration of the offending vehicle to police.

The one small satisfaction from the incident is that, in the process of reducing a chunk of kerb to rubble, the driver appeared to have damaged their car as well, the neighbour said.

“It looked like the suspension on the rear left of the vehicle was shot – that’d be a shame, wouldn’t it!”
