Rec Centre closes after medical event

A man has been flown to hospital after experiencing a medical related event at the Trust House Recreation Centre [THRC] on Masterton’s Dixon St at 11.15am yesterday.

Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed the man was transported to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Fire and Emergency Wairarapa assistant commander Craig Cottrill told the Times-Ages, “It was an ambulance call and we were co-respondent because we assist them with purple calls”.

“Fortunately, we were able to get there pretty quickly because it’s just across the road.”

Cottrill confirmed that CPR was already in progress when police arrived at the scene.

“The pool staff had begun CPR prior to the ambulance arriving,” Cottrill said.

Police set up a landing zone for the helicopter while the man was prepared for transfer to hospital.

Ambulance staff were able to stabilise the man before the helicopter took off, Cotrill said.

THRC sent an email and posted a notice on the Masterton District Council website stating, “Masterton’s Trust House Recreation Centre has been closed following a medical event on site. The complex will remain closed for the rest of the day [Tuesday 25 July] and is expected to reopen tomorrow.”
