Fire tips
After three concurrent fires in Canterbury last week, in addition to more fires further south, Fire and Emergency New Zealand is urging people to keep safe when lighting outdoor fires by following these key tips: keep your burn pile at least 10 metres away from other combustible materials; monitor the fire for the duration of the burn; be ready to respond to changing weather or fire behaviours; keep something to extinguish the fire nearby; ensure your fire is completely extinguished; and monitor old burn piles.
