Hughes Line

work ahead

Access to Hughes Line will be restricted to residents only next week to allow for work on culvert extensions. Emergency services access will be available if needed. Work is set to begin on the northern culvert first, and all residents must use the southern entrance of Hughes Line. After this is completed, the site foreman will speak with residents about which entrance to use. All work is weather permitting and subject to being held over for the next suitable day. Work starts on March 18 and runs to March 22, when it will take place between the hours of 6.30am and 5.30pm.

Heifer auction

at Masterton

Yesterday’s Masterton Saleyards wiener heifer auction saw a strong local presence with about 1000 cattle sold. Carrfields fetched a top price of $840 and a low of $480 from 246 wiener heifers. PGG Wrightson’s top price for its wiener heifers was $905, and the low was $450, with an average of $744.21 from 700 heifers. Most were sold to buyers from the Western Lakes, Mt Bruce, Eketāhuna, and the Waikato King Country. PGG Wrightson sheep and beef representative Andrew Jennings said the sale values exceeded expectations with a “good clearance” and “strong local buy-in”.

Council staff will host three drop-in sessions at Masterton District Library at 54 Queen St, where they will provide information about the fund and help with applications, on Tuesday, March 19 from 11am to noon; Thursday, March 21 from 5pm to 6pm; and Tuesday, March 26 from 3pm to 4pm. Applications close on April 8 at 12pm. Applications will be assessed by the council’s Climate Advisory Group before recommendations are considered at the June 26 MDC meeting.
