Martinborough get better of Opaki

Martinborough won all three doubles to wrap up a 6-3 victory over Opaki in the latest round of Wairarapa regional one interclub competition at home on Saturday and move into a clear second.

The scores were tied at 3-3 after the singles, with the home team’s top three men easily winning their matches and Opaki winning the fourth men’s singles and both women’s matches.

At the top of the order, Chris Wilkie was untroubled in beating Duncan Oakley 6-2 6-0, number two Ed Wilkie got the better of Chris Davidson 6-1 6-3, and Shane Colton was too good for Brett Dymond in winning 6-1 6-1.

Richie Day pulled a match back for Opaki with a 6-3 6-4 defeat of Quentin Larkin. The women’s singles matches were tight three-setters. Belinda Day came from a set down to beat Carla Didsbury 3-6 6-2 6-4, and Tori Bunny edged Marta Wojcikowski 6-3 4-6 6-4 to even the tie.

In the doubles, Chris and Rick Wilkie comfortably beat Oakley and Jon McNab 6-3 6-2, Mike Jones and Colton had a 7-5 6-1 defeat over Davidson and Richie Day, and Wojicowski and Didsbury picked up a valuable point for Martinborough with a hard-fought 7-6 2-6 6-4 win over Belinda Day and Bunny.

Carterton lead the race for a place in the Shirley Corlett Trophy final with 15 points, ahead of Martinborough with 13 points and Opaki with four points.
