Martinborough demolish Carterton to take regional 1 lead

Martinborough flexed their muscles with a 7-2 demolition of Carterton on Sunday to take the lead in Wairarapa regional one interclub.

The fixture was delayed a day to allow the Matinborough grass courts to dry out further, and the conditions suited the home side, as they won four of the six singles, played in the reverse-singles format, and made a clean sweep of he doubles.

Shane Colton blitzed an out of sorts William Day 6-0 6-1, ending Day’s unbeaten singles run this season.

Chris Wilkie overcame an early break of serve in the third set to wear down Matt Spooner 6-3 2-6 7-5 in match that lasted well over two hours.

Ed Wilkie defeated Andi Steinemann 6-2 6-1, and Katherine Jacobs recovered from a set down to beat Susie Barnes 2-6 6-2 6-1.

Carterton’s only points came from Josh Hutchings, who beat Quintin Larkin 6-2 7-5, and Laura Crawford, who got the better of Marta Wojcikowski 6-3 6-3.

In the doubles, Chris Wilkie and Colton cleaned up Day and Spooner 6-3 6-2. Ed and Rick Wilkie were taken to a super tiebreaker in beating Hutchings and Steinemann 6-3 5-7 10-3, and Jacobs and Wojcikowski were too good for Barnes and Crawford, winning 6-1 6-4.

Martinborough lead the standings on 22 points, followed by Carterton on 17 and Opaki on four.

Opaki host Martinborough on Thursday night and back up away to Carterton on Saturday.
