Mark Steventon continued his stunning run of form and saved Wairarapa College the blushes in a four-wicket loss to the St Patrick’s Town 2nd XI in the Wellington secondary schools Premier Two championship on Saturday.
Batting at number three, Steventon played a lone hand as wickets fell around him, so much so that when Max Donaldson became the fifth wicket to fall with the team’s score at 77, the five dismissed batsmen had scored only 10 runs among them.
He went on to score 85 runs in Waicol’s total of 146 on their slow home pitch.
Steventon was all aggression from the start of his innings, hitting the second ball he faced for six. In all he faced 64 balls and hit 14 fours.
Samuel Payne [14] and Hadley Wiramanaden [16no] were the only other players to post double figures in the innings which featured six ducks.
St Pat’s medium-fast bowler Ben Baker claimed 6-26, and fellow quick Sean Faulkner nabbed three of the top order batsmen.
In the three games since the start of the competition, Steventon leads the statistics for aggregate runs scored with 290, at an average of 96.67 and a strike of 131.82, with a highest score of 120.
In their response, St Pat’s lost five wickets with 86 on the board but a 37 not out by Ryan Scott-Rodriguez had them through to a comfortable win with more than 12 overs to spare.
Waicol have won one of their three games and sit fifth in the eight-team league. They are away to Newlands College on Saturday.
