ATHLETICS

The Athletics and Cycling Masterton contingent made their mark at Saturday’s Dorne Cup – the second of Athletics Wellington’s four annual interclub events.

The event was held at the usual venue of Trentham Memorial Park in Upper Hutt, and the group left Wairarapa’s clear, sunny skies to find overcast conditions with a cool wind.

However, despite the rain earlier in the week the ground conditions, while certainly soft, were not unduly wet.

The course had been modified somewhat from recent years, with more on the trails and only one stream crossing, although that was a bit deeper than some expected.

The course was very flat with the steepest parts to climb and descend being the Hutt River stopbanks.

The full course was a 4km loop, but female runners and men older than 60 had to complete only one and a half laps [6km], while other male runners did two full laps [8km].

The younger runners had various shorter distances.

Once again, ACM’s best success came in the men’s 60+ grade with Tony Price confirming his Vosseler Shield form by winning in 24mins 9secs for the 6km.

Unfortunately, the previous first and second result could not be repeated with Malcolm MacDonald finishing fourth on this occasion.

Sally Duffy repeated her Vosseler Shield result by finishing sixth in the women’s 35 grade in 26mins 23secs for 6km, with Heidi-Jane Humphries 12th.

Franky Spite ran ninth in the women’s 50+ grade with a time of 35mins 6secs and David Farlow was fifth in the men’s 70+ grade in 32mins 34secs.

Other ACM performances were Norm Chu [18th in men’s 60+], Brooke Miller [14th in girls’ under-11], Corey Miller [31st in men’s 35] and Ray Haste [36th in men’s 50+].
