Golfing from dawn until dusk might sound like a dream for some, but in reality, it’s hard yakka, as four keen golfers found out over the weekend. Luckily, it was all for a good cause.
Masterton Golf Club’s Cheycoda Cocks, Andy Pottinger, Joel Macklin, and Rob Blackett played 72 holes of non-stop golf on Saturday to raise funds for the Wairarapa Cancer Society.
Tee-off was at 5.30am to avoid some of the day’s heat. Aptly dubbed ‘The Longest Day’, the endurance event ended 12 hours later, after four rounds of golf had been played.
The team walked 35.5km during play. Golf professional Macklin said it had not been easy.
“We knew we had to finish, and we had to grind away till the end. It was a relief when we all made it. \
“The hardest part was to maintain performance levels when we started to feel fatigue – that made it tough,” he said.
“We were happy to support a great cause. Everyone is affected by cancer, and we know the Wairarapa Cancer Society relies on community support.”
The event raised more than $4600 for the Wairarapa Cancer Society.
