Giants extended their perfect start to the Intercity Premier Three championship with a clinical 8-0 win over Kapiti at South Park on Saturday.

Giants were rarely under pressure from the visitors in both facets of the game.

The Kapiti batters failed to get hold of the experienced Giants’ pitching duo of Justin ‘Chunky’ Karaitiana, who opened on the mound, and Tony Nixon, who closed out the game.

When it came to their turn at bat, the home side made the most of their chances and steadily built a good lead.

Willy Waitere had two double base hits for Giants.

Club president and team member Chris Feary said it was an all-round solid performance.

“It was just a good game,” he said.

“It was reasonably close but most innings the boys picked up runs and eventually rounded up the game pretty easily.”

“There were no home runs, just good solid single base hits and a couple of doubles by Willy Waitere. It was a good win.”

Giants are the only unbeaten team in the championship, with three wins from three games.

Meanwhile, in the Hutt Valley Major B Women’s Championship, Giants Blue won by default when Saints turned up with insufficient players.

A friendly game went ahead after Giants lent Saints some players. Giants Red suffered their first loss, going down 1-8 to Totara Park Gold in Upper Hutt.

And the club’s age-group sides had contrasting results in their opening games of the season. The under-15s defeated Hutt Valley Dodgers 16-2, while the under-13s lost in the last inning 11-12.
