The young and inexperienced Giants made a barnstorming start to the Intercity Softball Premier Three Championship thrashing the Demons 13-2 on Saturday.

Giants were hoping for a solid showing in their first game of the season at Fraser Park, Lower Hutt, with a very young side made up of players straight out of the club’s age-group teams, augmented with some experienced heads.

But the Masterton team belied their inexperience and wrapped up victory in the fifth inning.

Giants president Chris Feary wasn’t at the game but said the reports he received were that it was good all-round team performance.

“Batting, everybody was hitting the ball, the fielding was good, just a really good team effort,” Feary said.

“Nobody was outstanding, everybody was very consistent, and for the first time out for the young kids, you couldn’t have written a better script.”

The result bodes well for the season, with other clubs starting to follow the Giants’ lead of promoting their younger players.

“It seems to be that a lot of the clubs are now starting to do what we’ve done for the past couple of years, and they’re bringing these young kids through and pairing them up with a few older guys, which is really good to see for the sport.

“Luckily for us we’ve got a bit of a jump because we’ve been filtering a lot of our kids through for the last couple of seasons.”

Giants have the next two weekends off, with a bye on Saturday, and no games scheduled for Labour Weekend.

They will play Poneke-Kilbirnie at South Park on October 30.
