Setting a world record at the powerlifting world championships is the focus for 16-year-old Joe Teofilo.
The former Wairarapa College pupil won last year’s national championship in the sub junior under 53kg class and smashed the national bench record with a lift of 80kg, before surpassing that by another 10kg.
Teofilo, who is trained by his father, Pun, has already surpassed that in training, lifting 120kg, and is on target to give the world record a decent nudge.
However, getting to the world championships in Tokyo in May could be a bigger challenge, so Teofilo’s Carterton gym is putting on a fundraiser this weekend.
Strength Nation gym personal trainer Nicole Parkinson said the fundraiser will involve a 24-hour workout.
“There will be at least one person working out for every second of the 24 hours and the participants will be on a roster system.”
“We’re looking for individuals or businesses to sponsor the workout based on every calorie burnt,” Parkinson said.
Parkinson said Teofilo will be heavily involved in the fundraiser and will at least be doing the first and last workouts.
The fundraiser will run from noon on Saturday until noon Sunday at the Strength Nation Gym, Nelson St, Carterton.
