Wairarapa police, in conjunction with staff from Tararua district, searched a property in Eketāhuna and another in Pahiatua yesterday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Wasson told the Times-Age that the search warrants were executed in the late morning and early afternoon with the support of the armed offenders squad and an additional specialist squad.
“Enquiries remain ongoing, and police are speaking to the address occupants, who are assisting with our enquiries,” Wasson said.
“While there was no identified risk to the local communities, we treat the possession of unlawful firearms and drugs seriously.”
A resident who was travelling through Eketāhuna at the time of the raid there said he saw multiple police cars and what appeared to be a community hub van, in addition to a drone flying above the scene.
A police spokesperson said that “more information about the situation would be released when we are in a position to do so”.
“Members of the community should always report any suspicious or unlawful activity to the police,” Wasson added.
Anyone with information should report it via the 105 non-emergency line, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
