Police issue road rules reminder

Three car crashes in Masterton over the past two days have prompted police to issue a reminder to motorists to follow the rules, drive to the conditions, and don’t be “lazy”.

The first crash, at the intersection of High and Bledisloe streets, was reported to police at 4.40pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said there were no injuries as a result of the crash, in which a Holden Commodore rear-ended a Mazda Ute, but one of the cars did need to be towed and an officer was required to divert traffic at the intersection of Fleet and High streets for around half an hour.

Police responded to a second fender bender on Wednesday at 5.15pm at the intersection of Pownall St and York St, after a car rear-ended another vehicle at a stop sign.

It’s understood that none of the occupants in either vehicle was injured.

The third crash was reported to police at 2.15pm yesterday. “The event took place on Colombo Rd near Iorns St North, and it appeared that the vehicle had left the road and crashed into a fence,” a police spokesperson told the Times-Age.

“Police are speaking to the driver and other witnesses to determine what had occurred,” the spokesperson said.

“The traffic was not impacted by this incident.”

Following these crashes and a number of others in the region in recent weeks, Wairarapa Police area prevention manager Gill Flower was keen to remind motorists of some basic road rules.

“If there is a stop sign, stop; if there is a give way sign, give way; make sure you have enough distance from the car in front; and be vigilant – it’s simple,” Flower said.

“We have had a few crashes in the past few days and weeks; drive to the conditions, and you won’t fall off the road.”

Flower also took the opportunity to remind drivers who are involved in a crash that they should always stay to ascertain the situation and exchange insurance information.

  1. We drive in a NANNY STATE and that’s because of all the SAFETY MEASURES we have for road works. How many red cones do you really need? 🤔 and flashing lights on so many vehicles?. We have one Stop ✋ sign and one give way sign plus one crossing sign just to name a few BUT IF IT’S ROAD WORKS? DON’T THINK 🤔 WE WILL CONTROL YOU LIKE A BABY. Drivers must use there BRAINS 🧠 🙄 😒 🤔 OR DON’T DRIVE 🤔.
