The first round of the PSP New Zealand Jetsprint Championship is coming to Tauherenikau near Featherston this Saturday. The boats will tear around Tauherenikau’s water track at insane velocity, as driver’s flex their lightning-quick responses and navigate the hazards at triple-figure speeds.
There will be three categories of boat able to race – Group B boats, limited to 412 cubic inches of engine size, Group A boats, limited to 412 cubic inches of engine size and naturally aspirated, and then the notorious Superboat category, where engines can be as large as drivers desire. The sky’s the limit, as is the driver’s bank balance. This category of boat can accelerate to about 130kmh in just three seconds.
Seven local drivers will compete this year, with a few novices coming into the sport.
Multiple world champions, from all over New Zealand, will also be racing in the first event of the championships.
The Jetsprints are a great family event, with the track visible from anywhere folks decide to pitch.
There will also be multiple food trucks and stalls, so attendees will be able to get some quality food in between races.
