With helmets secured children enjoyed a day at the Pedal Ready Bike Rodeo at Featherston School on Thursday to celebrate the bike track’s naming.

Jack Ward from South Featherston School was the winner of the competition to provide the name, coming up with Windy Wheels Track.

Organiser Cheryl Gallaway said competition judges and Featherston principals Tana Klaricich, Jennifer Muth and Gina Smith enjoyed the eight-year-old’s idea because “it was fun but fitting”, and was on point with regard to what will make the Featherston Community Bike Track unique.

At the announcement they had to hold on to their hats and prizes as the wind whipped up, Gallaway said.

She said it was great to see the realisation come up on Ward’s face that his idea would be the official name of the bike track.

He received $200 worth of bike accessories and back to school supplies, including a helmet and bike lock.

Runner-up was Brae Bradley for his “Wheely fun bike track” entry.

“We all look forward to seeing kids having a wheely good time on the track,” Gallaway said.

The winners were chosen from 40 entries.

Gallaway said they were thankful for all those who entered and the Featherston Library for hosting the competition over the school holidays.

After the announcement it was time to ride around the skills course set up by Pedal Ready.

Hilleke Townsend from Pedal Ready said the event was great, and two children learned to ride without training wheels which was “quite neat”.

She said the track catered for all skill levels – the more confident could go fast but they also had to be aware of their surroundings and the younger children.
