One person has died after a serious two-vehicle crash on SH2 near Eketahuna this morning.

Two women were trapped in a vehicle, and police say one died at the scene.

It is understood the second woman, who was in a serious condition, was flown by Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter to Palmerston North Hospital.

There were two occupants of the other car, a ute, who suffered minor injuries.

Westpac’s Life Flight rescue helicopter also responded to the crash but did not take a patient.

Police had received a report of a diesel spill on the road between Mt Bruce and Pahiatua only a few minutes before the crash happened, and will be “taking this into account” in their crash investigation.

Pahiatua Police Sargeant Shane Brown said if anyone had seen a vehicle they suspect was leaking diesel, to contact police.

He said the vehicle would have been travelling north on SH2 between Masterton and Pahiatua between 7.30am and 8am.

The road has been reopened.
