A Wairarapa blues musician will perform to the public today and tomorrow to raise money for Wairarapa paediatricians.

Phil Randall of The Greenstones will be singing and playing guitar outside Selah Music Centre in Masterton from 10am to 4pm today and tomorrow.

Paediatricians provide a service that was near and dear to the musician’s heart. His daughter was involved in a car crash when she was two years old.

“She was nearly killed. That’s why my main focus is doing this for children. They’re our future.”

Randall had been immersed in music his entire life.

When he was 19, Randall’s band Judge Hoffman won the 1972 Battle of the Bands.

Randall had toured with Tony Joe White and opened for Jerry Jeff Walker.

White gave Randall the biggest compliment of his life when he compared him and his band with the jazz musicians of Mississippi.

“I’m a big fan of Tony,” Randall said, “Playing with him was a dream come true.”

All proceeds raised would go towards paediatricians at Wairarapa Hospital.

This would be the second year Randall performed for the cause.

Last year, Randall raised $390 from one day of performing. He’s aiming for more this year.

“I’m always trying to do something for the kids every year in May.”
