The Waipoua River bridge in Masterton was closed on Friday after walkers reported its boards were “moving”.
Masterton District Council closed the bridge for the weekend ahead of an assessment today
“We’re looking into what is causing the boards to move – a contributing factor may be the hot weather,” a council spokesperson said.
“We appreciate closure of the bridge will be an inconvenience to some members of our community.
“However, we want to make sure there are no health and safety risks that need to be addressed.”
The nearest alternative crossing for the river is the bridge on Opaki Rd, about 200m away.
The Waipoua River is still rated as a no-go zone for swimmers because of toxic algae.
Great headline. Good to see there are still some literary craftsmen in the newspaper biz.
