Tie fence a fun alternative

By Jake Beleski

You may have heard of the bra fence in Central Otago, but what about Wairarapa’s very own tie fence?

A drive along Norfolk Rd in Masterton will eventually bring you to Anne and Nobby Clarke’s property, which is unmistakable thanks to the diverse collection of ties running along their front fence.

You can hardly miss it, as it is located right next to a massive corrugated iron bull that belongs to the neighbouring property.

Mr Clarke was in the army, and collected quite a number of ties during his career.

When the time came to throw them out, Mrs Clarke suggested an alternative.

“My husband retired and was going to throw them out, but I thought we could do something fun,” she said.

“A few friends have added to it over the years – some are getting a bit tatty now.”

They started hanging ties on the fence over four years ago, and strangers were welcome to add their own on their way past.

“That would be great if we could get more on the fence – the uglier the better.”
