Masterton was hit last night with heavy rain, loud thunder and hail just hours after experiencing sun and T-shirt weather.

Wairarapa Midweek editor Emily Ireland said water was knee-deep at the intersection of Cameron Cres and Church St, and River Rd was likely to be closed.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until 7pm last night for Tararua and Masterton, warning people of heavy rain causing surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas.

The storm was expected to clear overnight but MetService warned thunderstorms could continue this afternoon in the ranges.
