The site of the former South Wairarapa Veterinary Services on Carterton’s High St is being redeveloped, making way for two shops and six two-bedroom apartments.

Developer Highcart Ltd is planning to have the apartments built and ready for sale in a year.

The six apartments proposed are two-storey, duplex dwellings.

Each of the three blocks would have two units.

A garage would go in at ground level and the bedrooms upstairs.

They are planned to be 100m2, including the garage.

The company purchased the land in October 2018 and gained the Carterton District Council Certificate of Compliance last November.

The building consent application would go to the council soon.

Company directors Ben Collis and former Carterton resident William Giles are aiming to start work at the site in about 10 weeks.

“We don’t predict too many hurdles with the building consent and all going well these apartments will be finished in a year and on the market,” Collis said.

He expected the apartment sale price to be fromn $450,000 to $499,000.

“It depends on the market at the time, but we think for investors that want rentals, they will work well and are in demand,” Collis said.

“But they are great for people downsizing too.

“We have found two-bedroom apartments near a high road are the most popular size.”

Collis said other towns in the area were moving ahead and Carterton was due for some modern, new dwellings close to the town centre.

The apartments would be next to the Ranchmans Petfood building which ceased production mid-May 2019 after many complaints about the stench.

But Highcart had no plans to purchase that site.

The company owns the grass area and driveway from High St down to where the apartments would be built. The 2029m2 land block backs up to William Wong Place.

The council’s district plan permits residential activity in the commercial zone provided that the residential aspect was not ground floor with direct road frontage.

The building site is at 2-8 High St.
