One person was trapped after a serious two vehicle head-on crash on State Highway 2 just north of Carterton.
An elderly man was taken to Wairarapa Hospital by Wellington Free Ambulance in a critical condition, and had to be cut out of his vehicle by fire crews.
Both cars only had one male occupant and it is understood the other driver is being treated at the scene with less severe injuries.
It is understood the crash occurred at the top end of the north-bound passing lane.
Emergency services were called to the scene just before 3pm, and the serious crash unit will be investigating.
Diversions are in place from East Taratahi Rd to Hughes Line, and motorists can expect delays.
The road is expected to be closed for at least an hour.
we use the road most days, and the speed of some of the vehicles can be frightening.. .. trust the elderly gentleman improves… good thing there is Hughes Line to travel on, but takes longer.
Would be nice if Hughes line was widened as it dangerous with both cars and trucks on most normal days let a lone with full traffic when being used as a by pass.
