A lavish home on one of Greytown’s most exclusive streets was the most expensive residential home sold in the region this year.

The private five-bedroom home at 19 Jellicoe St was bought for $2m in September.

According to the latest data from Quotable Value, the 1920s house sold for 16 times more than Wairarapa’s cheapest home for 2017.

Described as a combination of modern and classic architecture from the English Country Revival style, the Greytown home is hidden away from the road, and boasts three bathrooms, two toilets, and two living rooms.

The outdoor area steps out onto nearly 3000msq of lawn and extends out to a swimming pool, and to an assortment of fruit trees.

The high-profile property also featured in the January 2015 edition of House & Garden.

The property was previously sold in May 2014 for $1.1m.

The recent rateable valuations bumped the rateable value up an extra $550,000 on its previous valuation to a new value of $1.9m.

At the other end of the scale, a rural Wairarapa house has claimed the new title of the cheapest residential house sold in the region this year.

The Tinui home, at 21 Blackhill Rd, was bought in July for $125,000.

The three-bedroom home sits on an 809m2 piece on land, near the centre of the township.

Farmlands lifestyle and residential agent Damien Pivac sold the home this year.

In the past year, Mr Pivac had sold a handful of properties in the Tinui township.

Buyers in the area span from locals moving back home or others relocating, Mr Pivac said.

Recent activity in the small town, including the newly-opened Tinui Tea Rooms, had been a draw card to the area, he said.

As a 1950s home, the house received a new rateable value recently of $130,000 – that’s $35,000 more than its 2014 value.

It was previously bought in February 2008 for a mere $95,000.
