A group of classic cars from Wairarapa Ram Rodders pulled up outside Masterton Foodbank on Sunday with a ram tray full of food parcels, collected from each of Wairarapa’s towns over two weekends.
Wairarapa Ram Rodders secretary Jenny Grange said meeting foodbank manager Lyn Tankersley, had taught her the foodbank was about being passionate about people.
“It’s not just food, it’s toiletries, everything – it is about life,” Grange said.
She said the club had seen people in their community struggle from the financial impacts of covid-19.
“Even the New Zealand Hot Rod Association reduced their fees this year, and we’ve reduced our membership fees to help people stay in the club and give them something to do,” Grange said.
She felt the foodbank drive was a positive way to give back to the community.
Grange called Masterton Foodbank Wairarapa’s “mothership”.
“What we have delivered today will be distributed through Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, and Martinborough later this week,” she said.
“It’s all about enthusiasm, doing stuff for Wairarapa,” Grange said.
“[Wairarapa Ram Rodders] is club that has been running since 1977, but it was revived over the past couple of years,” Grange said.
This is the first time a car group had stepped up to help Masterton Foodbank, Tankersley said.
Grange said the club always did a Show and Shine event for Father’s Day but due to covid-19 restrictions, they were not able to.
They had already planned to fundraise for the foodbank and last year they fundraised for Wellington Free Ambulance, Grange said.
