A pedestrian was “clipped” as a speeding car lost control and left the road before crashing through multiple fences on Friday night, police say.

The driver, a 40-year-old man, was travelling “at speed” north along Colombo Rd in Masterton at about 8pm on Friday, Sergeant Shane Nolan said.

After crashing through fences and clipping the pedestrian on Colombo Rd near Johnstone St, the driver was trapped.

Fire crews had to cut the driver from the vehicle, according to Masterton Fire Station officer Doug Flowerday.

He was taken to Wairarapa Hospital with serious injuries before being transferred to Wellington Hospital by Life Flight helicopter on Saturday.

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesperson said the pedestrian was also taken to Wairarapa Hospital with moderate injuries.

Resident Christine Edwards arrived home to the aftermath of the crash on Friday night to find trees on the corner of the property had been destroyed by the travelling car.

The property appeared to be the first point of contact as the car left the road.
