Man injured by stingray

A diver was injured by a stingray today at Riversdale Beach in Wairarapa.

The beach was closed by Riversdale lifeguards initially, amid fears of a shark attack, but it has been confirmed there was “absolutely no shark attack”, according to Dave Rose of the Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Club.

The injured man is in a “comfortable position” being treated by paramedics from Wellington Free Ambulance and Life Flight’s Rescue Helicopter at the scene.

The beach has been reopened, and lifeguards are back on patrol.

It is understood the incident occurred at low tide today, while stingrays were sunning themselves.
