Wairarapa’s historic Fernside Gardens, near Featherston, will be open to the public over the weekend of February 15-16 as a fundraiser for the Greytown Little Theatre building project.
First cultivated in the late 1800s, the gardens have been developed over the years in a style that reflects both English arts and crafts with a layout in rooms but with the additional touches of European and Japanese water gardens, and Australian and New Zealand natives interspersed.
The lake area played a starring role as Lothlorien in several scenes of Sir Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
“This is a rare opportunity to visit these beautiful gardens of national significance and it will be a magical day out for garden enthusiasts and lovers of historical places,” Greytown Little Theatre’s president John Gilberthorpe said.
Organisers are hoping to open the new building in late 2021, the centennial of the Greytown Little Theatre. Tickets for the event are on sale from eventfinda.co.nz for $28 and cash sales will be available from Heathers Attic, next to The French Baker, Main Street, Greytown for $25.
