A one-armed girl meets an organist selling body-parts and exquisite skin.

This is part of the story line for a coming of age performance held in Greytown starting yesterday.

Greytown writer William Connor has joined Berlin-based theatre director Anna Peschke to stage their new work The Quiet Living of Lost Things, in a woolshed in Greytown.

The team includes Greytown producer Steffen Kreft, and German theatre and dramaturg Uwe Lehr.

Connor said he had always wanted to do a project with Peschke and this project started to come together during the last German summer.

When Connor would get stuck during a part in the performance’s story, Peschke’s unique prop collection would help move forward and inspire what would come next.

The performance starts with the story being told before the audience gets the chance to go though different areas in the woolshed and immerse themselves in the story.

“It’s a real experience for the audience and they get to discover in their own way,” Peschke said.

She said the audience was challenged to do something for their cultural experience because they would explore with all their senses engaged.

The performance was originally planned for Wellington, then it was decided Wairarapa would be more fitting to host the project.

Peschke said people in the region had a connection to a place like the woolshed, which in itself was a forgotten museum of lost voices and lost things.

Connor said he had always wanted to do something in Greytown.

“There is something very special about this place,” he said.

“There is an appetite and real potential for art and exploratory special art.”

The show will take place at Monty’s Cottage, 33 Monty’s Lane in Greytown, today at noon and 6.30pm, and tomorrow at noon.
