Masterton’s golden oldies enjoyed an early Christmas lunch at the Copthorne Hotel on Thursday.

The annual over-70s luncheon laid on by Trust House had more than 500 people seated for a slap-up meal with all the trimmings – turkey, ham, Christmas pudding and drinks.

The trust has been providing meals and entertainment to pensioners for more than 30 years.

Masterton resident Vi Miller, 83, has been attending the lunch for the past 13 years. She used to attend the event with her husband before he passed away 10 years ago.

She said the event provided a rare opportunity to socialise.

“It’s a great thing for the older people because they all have a chance to have company, to meet together and be together. There’s an awful lot of us on our own, men and women.”

The guests were greeted by Santa [Copthorne general manager Jill Harrison] and a band of ‘Trusty-elves’ [led by Allan Pollard, Trust House chief executive and Jacqui Hoar, Copthorne Solway Park operations manager].
