Car ‘zig-zags’ through properties into tree

An elderly driver was left shaken after her car ploughed through three Masterton properties before smashing into a tree.
The car ended up through a fence and in the front yard of a Beetham St house just after midday yesterday.
Acting traffic sergeant Shayne Nolan said the driver was an elderly woman.
“It’s quite spectacular the number of fences she’s gone though.”
Mr Nolan said the woman’s mishap began in her own driveway, about a block away from where the car crashed to a stop.
“It appears she had some control, but she has crossed through a few properties.”
He said police were unsure of how the incident had occurred, but they were not ruling out a vehicle malfunction or medical event.
The woman was taken by ambulance to Wairarapa Hospital with minor injuries.
“She had a hard knock to the head.”
Mr Nolan said it was lucky no one had been in the path of the wayward car, with the residents of most of the damaged properties away from home at the time of the crash.
A couple of people would be coming home to a bit of a shock, he said.
A resident of the Beetham St house where the car ended up said she had seen “the car zig-zag over the road” before it smashed into her tree.
“It was such a scary thing. The poor elderly lady was shaken. She walked away from the car and I took her inside until the ambulance came.”
