Eighty-eight kids from six schools came together at the Masterton Intermediate School (MIS) hall on Thursday to battle for supremacy.
Liter-mania, a 10-round literacy quiz for kids in years five to eight, had its inaugural event on Thursday.
An annual math quiz, Matharapa, tested kids’ numeracy skills, but there was no local literacy quiz in Wairarapa.
Teacher Amanda Jolliffe said the new competition was created with help from MIS Librarian Charlotte McIntosh for kids who were more book-oriented.
Twenty-two teams of four tackled a series of questions ranging from fairy tales to authors like Roald Dalhl.
MIS student Sasha Waston, 10, was competing for the top prize.
She had been training for the quiz with her team, Tauwharenikau, during Friday lunchtimes.
“I really like reading.”
Sasha said the most difficult round was Maori myth and legends.
“Some of the questions were hard if you haven’t read the stories or seen the movies.”
Nine-year-old Juliet Wearing from Douglas Park School had earned her morning tea break.
She said the quiz was putting her team through its paces.
“It’s a very hard quiz – we haven’t got out brains on properly I don’t think.”
Juliet said she was keen to give it another go next year.
“I will if I get the opportunity.”
Schools taking part on Thursday were Douglas Park, Hadlow Preparatory, Lakeview, hosts Masterton Intermediate, Masterton Primary and Whareama.
The year five and six category was won by Lakeview A, who were awarded Roald Dahl books provided by Hedleys Booksellers. The Waipua Warriors from MIS were top of the year seven and eight category, winning Paper Plus vouchers.
“Waipoua Warriors”, as in Waipoua River
