Work is progressing on Masterton District Council’s [MDC] application to the High Court to allow the sale of land at Panama Village.
This comes after the council’s adoption of the Long-Term Plan Amendment in June to progress public housing development at Panama Village.
The council runs 44 senior housing units at Panama Village occupying about one-third of the available land area, leaving 4.2ha of land vacant and available for more housing.
MDC wants to make the vacant land at Panama Village available for someone else to build more public housing because there is limited public housing in the Masterton district.
However, because the land was bequeathed for senior housing, the council must apply to the High Court for it to be sold and developed for public housing.
Chief executive David Hopman said council staff had been working with lawyers to collate the necessary documentation for the High Court application.
“This work is under discussion with Crown Law. Once finalised we will be able to submit the application to the High Court.” – NZLDR
