Women in Business 2022

Deciding to follow your dream and create a business, or to change direction in life, takes an enormous amount of courage at the best of times. To do so in the time of covid brings up another set of challenges but that hasn’t deterred many of the women in business profiled in this magazine.

They have been working quite successfully in a chosen field and for a variety of reasons have taken a U-turn and dived head-long into doing something they have always dreamed of doing. Their stories are awe-inspiring.

Often, I would go along to meet one of these women thinking I was going to hear all about, say dog grooming, but then learned about working in the British Air Force caring for members of the royal family and UN officials. Or the Russian-born writer and editor who creates cakes which are delicious works of art. There is the

woman who faced her addiction issues and now runs a coaching service helping others, and a PE teacher who has taken up upholstery transforming people’s precious furniture.

There’s similar themes in this year’s Women in Business too. I came across mother and daughter operations and there’s also nurses who have created businesses from a hobby and others finding their niche in semi-retirement.

Some organisations featured celebrate their female staff and take a bow to the creatives in their community – think Ka Pai Carterton and the Wairarapa Women’s Centre. Some businesses have evolved from women’s love of beautiful things, and they have created entrancing places to visit. – Maison Eketahuna, The Whole

Nine Yards in Masterton, and Adelaide Eliza’s in Greytown to name a few. Interestingly, some of the business profiles involve an all-woman team for example Wairarapa Vet Services and Take Note Carterton.

Women in many occupations feature here – we celebrate you all.
