min wage vox pop

Reporter FLYNN NICHOLLS hit the streets in Masterton to find out what people thought of the Government’s $1.50 minimum wage rise, which takes effect on April 1.

Samantha Paku-Rimene

It’s a good thing. Grocery prices are getting ridiculous. I was in the supermarket the other day and saw $6 for a head of broccoli! Wages need to keep up.

Josh Bartley

Of course, I think it’s a good idea. I’m happy, I think I’ll get a raise. I’m always happy to get more money. Might even pick up another job.

Eddie Matenga

I’m a shearer, which I love because you can make good money. But it’s seasonal, and it can be inconsistent.

With the minimum wage going up, I might look at getting a more consistent job, five days a week. That’s not bad money.

Katie Manson

It’s really good for the people on minimum wage, good for the young ones, but I hope middle-wage people like us get a raise too – like, people who have been working for a while. But I guess that’s up to their employer.

Josie Kumeroa

It will depend on whether people with higher wages will get a raise too. Some people will have earned raises and now will be back on minimum wage, which isn’t fair.

Danny Samu

Well, money’s money, eh. I reckon it’s about time the Government start showing some love to our people.
