Long power outage after line downed

An unplanned power outage in Greytown yesterday caused thousands of customers to lose power for several hours.

A Powerco spokesperson said field crews were called to repair a downed power line in Udy St in Greytown yesterday morning.

“A total of 2555 customers lost power at 8.02am,” the spokesperson said.

“All of the properties affected had power restored by 12.15pm.

“At this stage, the cause of the line down is unknown.”

The Powerco spokesperson also had some advice about what to do in the event of coming across a downed power line.

“If this happens, people should call 111 immediately or Powerco’s emergency number, 0800 27 27 27,” they said.

“It’s important to stay at least 10m away from the lines and poles, which is about the length of a bus.

“Downed lines should always be treated as live.”
