Helicopter called for two-car Featherston crash

One person has been airlifted to Wellington Hospital in critical condition after a two-car crash in Featherston yesterday.

Emergency services attended the scene just after 11.30am.

The crash happened at the intersection of SH53 Revans St and Lyons St, which led to SH53 being closed and diversions put in place while the serious crash unit investigated.

A neighbour said the vehicle heading north on Lyons St failed to give way at the intersection and was smashed and knocked on its side by a vehicle heading west on SH53 Revans St, leaving debris strewn across the road.

After hearing the crash and seeing a plume of smoke, a group of neighbours came onto the street to flip the vehicle back upright.

The vehicle crossing the intersection from Lyons St had side damage, while the vehicle driving down SH53 Revans St had frontal damage.

Featherston fire chief Colin McKenna said the Greytown fire crew cut the Lyons St driver from the wreckage.

Wellington Free Ambulance treated two other patients at the scene, one in a minor condition and one in a moderate condition.

Neither of them needed transport to hospital.

Ambulance crews treated the critical patient until a helicopter landed at Featherston School to take them to Wellington.
