A young man has been killed in a quad bike accident on an Eketahuna farm.
Police confirmed emergency services responded to a fatal incident at a Parkville Central Rd property at 10.15am on Thursday.
A police spokesperson said the man was found underneath the quad bike.
The Times-Age understands farm workers rushed to the man’s aid after it had rolled.
“Despite medical attention, the man in his early 30s was not able to be revived and sadly died at the scene,” police said.
Police said the Serious Crash Unit attended the scene, and WorkSafe had been notified.
WorkSafe confirmed it was making initial inquiries but said an investigation had not yet been launched.
Recently published WorkSafe data reported 668 serious harm, injury or illness notifications concerning quad bikes between 2010 and 2022. Coronial statistics recorded 99 people were killed in quad bike incidents between 2007 and 2019, the majority of which happened at work.
WorkSafe said a total of 77 people were killed while using quad bikes in the workplace between 2006 and 2022.
Eketahuna’s fatality would take this year’s national death toll to five. A man in his 30s died last month after the quad bike he was on rolled on a property in Dunedin.
