Carterton District Council’s satisfaction at 45pc

Carterton District Council’s [CDC] resident satisfaction rating remains at 45 per cent, its latest survey shows.

About 500 residents took part in the annual perception survey in March and April, which asked for opinions on council services and facilities.

Although results showed that satisfaction with facilities and amenities remained high compared with last year, overall satisfaction and value for money remained low, at 45 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively.

Residents spoke highly of the council’s parks, facilities, and events centre, with 84 per cent of respondents “satisfied” or “very satisfied”.

More than 90 per cent of respondents praised the library and its services.

Satisfaction with the district’s roads, cycleways, and footpaths had improved to 47 per cent, up from 40 per cent.

Water supply satisfaction was 65 per cent, up from 49 per cent.

Satisfaction with sewerage and stormwater systems had plummeted compared with last year.

Respondents gave a 59 per cent rating to the town’s sewerage system [75 per cent in 2021] and 44 per cent for stormwater [53 per cent in 2021].

CDC chief executive Geoff Hamilton said he appreciated people providing honest feedback about council services.

“Constructive comment is essential for improvement. It gives us further opportunity to consider key topics of council business,” he said.

“We can take action, and we will take on board the comments received, both “positive” or “negative.

“It is all valuable and offers evidence of what’s working and potential improvements. It opens opportunities for positive change.”

Hamilton said that initiatives were already underway that would address some of this year’s feedback.

“We are improving our service request process to ensure timely responses and that we follow up with an outcome from customer queries or suggestions.

“We have been working to expand our reach, using electronic newsletters and communications, especially with those who already engage with council electronically.

“Delivering our major projects on time, on spec, and on budget will go a long way to building trust and confidence with our community.

“Progressing through our key projects will show our commitment to resolving long-term issues.

“We will work hard to improve the perception of council and strengthen our reputation by accomplishing our goals.”

He said CDC punched above its weight and had a hard-working team “with a genuine love for Carterton”.

Elected members discussed the survey at the ordinary council meeting this week.
