Joyriders looking for a bit of fun have made off with two golf carts from a Masterton club.
The carts were stolen late on Saturday night after the thieves cut through a padlocked storage shed at Mahunga Golf Club.
Club president Layton Kawana said the carts were taken for a joyride through central Masterton.
He said police recovered one cart on Sunday morning on Villa St, where it had run out of petrol.
The second cart, which was electric, was found by community members at the Queen Elizabeth Park BMX track with a flat battery.
Kawana said the battery alone was worth $2000.
The petrol-powered cart, which suffered some damage, is still with the police.
The electric cart was not damaged.
“We had a committee meeting, and we think it was a couple of kids having a joyride.
“We’ve got lights and padlocks; I’m not sure what else we can do,“ Kawana said.
“There were a couple of campers staying at the club grounds, and they didn’t hear a thing.”
The club committee has concluded the “annoying” incident involved “some kids being silly”.
Kawana’s main concern is that the theft may mean the club’s insurance premiums increase: “We’re just a small club trying to make ends meet.”
He said he was grateful to the club and community members who helped track the carts down after their theft was publicised on social media.
