Road closed

Memorial Dr in Masterton will be closed on Saturday from 7am to 8pm for the Summer Hummer concert at Queen Elizabeth Park. Parking options for event attendees will be published in tomorrow’s paper.

Climate fund

Applications are now open for Masterton District Council’s [MDC] Community Climate Fund. The fund, which launched last year, offers grants ranging from $2000 to $20,000 from a total fund of $50,000. An information sheet and application form are available on the Community Climate Fund webpage on the council’s website [mstn.govt.nz], and hard copies are available at the council’s office and library. Applications will be assessed by the Climate Advisory Group. MDC strategic planning manager Tania Madden said the council is looking forward to receiving good applications that will “make a real difference in tackling climate change in the district”. Applications close at noon on April 8.

Prohibited fire

The entire Wellington district, including Wairarapa, remains in a prohibited fire season. Wairarapa moved to a prohibited fire season in January and the restrictions will stay in effect until further notice. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said that recent rainfall hasn’t been sufficient to alleviate the fire danger in the region and conditions remain warm and dry, with grass, gorse, scrub, and pine across the region still highly combustible after the dry and windy summer. Anybody wishing to seek fire safety advice should visit www.checkitsalright.nz.

Response event at the Hub

The Masterton community are invited to an event to find out more about the Central Community Emergency Hub and the types of help needed after an emergency. The hub is a place to meet and coordinate efforts to help each other during and after a disaster. Participants will be able to practice various volunteer roles and experience an interactive earthquake scenario. It is open to all ages and abilities, and no experience is needed. There will be tea, coffee, and finger food provided. The event will run today at the YMCA Masterton, 371 Queen St, Masterton from 7am to 9am and at Douglas Park School, 136 Cole St, Masterton from 4pm to 6pm.
