News in brief, Tuesday April 16

Clarification

A Local Democracy story that ran in the Wairarapa Times-Age about Masterton District Council’s proposed fees and charges increase stated a “new charge set to be introduced in the 2024-25 year is a fee to use the Wairarapa Archive. It would be free for the first 30 minutes and then $30 for each subsequent half hour.” This charge is for people who cannot visit the archive or would like to use its specialised research service and request the Archive staff carry out research on their behalf. The first half hour of research is free; after that, the fee is $30 per half hour. Access to the Wairarapa Archive is free. People are welcome to visit the archive and access documents to carry out their own research. Staff are available to assist visitors in learning how to use Archive resources, help identify relevant sources to help people with their research, and provide access to the archive materials.

Water outage

There will be an “interruption of water supply” on Carterton’s Peaks Avenue and Kakariki Crescent today to connect new pipework to the Carterton District Council’s water network. It is scheduled for between 10 am and 2 pm. People affected are advised to fill containers with water ahead of the scheduled outage, avoid using appliances that need water during it, and run a cold water tap for about a minute afterwards to clear air bubbles. People can call the council on 06 379 4030 if they need more information.

Creative community

Grant funding applications for Masterton District Council’s creative communities scheme are now open. The scheme is aimed at encouraging community involvement, celebrating cultural diversity, and encouraging young people to participate in arts activities. Applications can be made for things like exhibitions, workshops, staff costs for short-term projects, artist development, arts promotion, and community participation. Applications close on May 24.
