House fire

A fire investigator attended the scene on Saturday morning but has not yet identified the cause.

Pahiatua water
A Tararua District Council spokesperson said yesterday that Pahiatua treated water levels increased from 14.6 per cent on Thursday to 21.9 per cent capacity on Friday morning. A 50 per cent treated water capacity in both reservoirs is needed, equating to three days of supply. Although water levels are on the rise, TDC is still urging residents to conserve water and to respect the total outdoor ban that is currently in place. The water remains treated and safe to drink.
Clarification
An article in Saturday’s Times-Age titled “Labour leader’s pitch for region” incorrectly stated that Labour intends to introduce agricultural emissions into the Emissions Trading Scheme [ETS]. Labour wants to introduce a split gas levy on agricultural emissions instead of putting them in the ETS. The party plans to have the levy in place by quarter four of 2025 and wants to use the revenue from the levy to reward on-farm carbon sequestration and invest in emission-reducing farm technology.
