Festival flags

The Greytown Community Board has rejected a proposal to sponsor flags for the town’s Festival of Christmas. At a meeting this week the board raised the prospect of funding the $1595 flags for the festival. The board chair noted the Festival of Christmas made a “huge contribution” to the town. However, it was rejected due to some members feeling uncomfortable with the word ‘Christmas’. The board resolved to erect the flags in July if the festival organisers were happy to purchase them.

Huge Line
still closed

Hughes Line between East Taratahi and Cornwall roads will remain closed for urgent maintenance next week. The roadworks on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Carterton resulted in increased traffic on Hughes Line, and degradation of the road shoulders. Carterton District Council said the maintenance work – intended to last a week – would instead continue over the weekend and into next week. The council will update the community on the timeframe for reopening next week.

Emergency alert

There will be one phone alert impossible to ignore tomorrow. A nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert will take place between 6-7pm. The alert will be broadcast from cell towers across New Zealand to all capable mobile phones – there is no need to download an app or subscribe to a service to receive it. Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office said it acknowledged that the alert was loud, but said it was an important tool to save lives. “In a real-life emergency situation, an alert may be sent to target areas affected by serious hazards. If you get an alert, stop, read the message and take it seriously.”

Native nursery

Pae tu Mokai o Tauira ropu will be hosting its first public open day at its native tree nursery – He Kotare. Tomorrow’s opening day is a chance to meet the nursery managers, have a chat, and receive a tour of the nursery. Plants will also be available to purchase. The open day will run from 10am-noon, on Sunday at 23 North Soldiers Settlement Rd, Featherston.
