Cold continues

Wairarapa’s cold snap will continue until at least Wednesday next week, with the top daytime temperature reaching 16 degrees Celsius on Saturday, according to Metservice. Today will feature an overnight low of 4 degrees, southwesterlies, and a daytime high of 13 degrees. Tomorrow is set to have the coldest night for the coming days, reaching a low of 2 degrees and only rising to 15 degrees during the day. Sunday is forecast to be “fine with southwesterlies”, with a low of 3 degrees and a high of 16. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are all expected to have lows of 3 degrees and highs in the mid-teens. Metservice said a weak ridge of high pressure covers New Zealand today and tomorrow morning.

“A cold front will then move slowly northwards over the country later Saturday and Sunday, with a shallow low developing on the front over central New Zealand late Sunday or Monday.” It said the risk of severe weather is considered minimal during the forecast period.

Talent show

Entries close today for Talent Wairarapa, a showcase exhibition of the region’s talent. The competition is open to all performers ranging from bands to jugglers to comedians.

Entry costs $5 for an individual or $10 for a group, with entry forms on the Talent Wairarapa Facebook page. The heats will be on Saturday, May 20, at Carterton School, followed by the semifinals on June 3 at Makoura College, and June 10 at Kuranui College, with the finals at Carterton Events Centre on June 17.

Kmart petition

A local has started a petition to bring the budget department store Kmart to Wairarapa. The petitioner argued that in Wairarapa, there are many families on a tight budget, and suggested “there are many families who could benefit from this.” The petitioner said with a population of 29,000 and climbing, Masterton is “almost the size of a city”.

“I have started this petition to show how many of us would like a Kmart in the region.” As of 2pm yesterday, 326 people signed the petition, with a goal to reach 500.
