Crown apology
The Crown will formally apologise to local iwi Ngati Kahungunu at Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton tomorrow morning. Minister of Treaty Negotiations Andrew Little will deliver the apology on behalf of the Crown, at a 9.30am ceremony. The apology signals the final part of the settlement between the Crown and the Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tamaki Nui-a-Rua Settlement Trust. The iwi settlement bill was in negotiations for 30 years and passed in Parliament last December.
Smash and enter
A man is facing a trespass notice after police responded to a disorder report on Lincoln Rd at 11am yesterday. Police said a window was smashed and a male entered the Masterton property without permission. Police said the parties were known to each other and confirmed no one was injured in the incident. However, police said inquiries were ongoing and that the man would be trespassed.
Solway crash
The drivers of two cars that crashed in Solway yesterday have escaped serious injury. Emergency services responded to the two-vehicle collision on the corner of Vivian and Harley streets just after 11am. Wellington Free Ambulance attended but was stood down.
Polytech grad
UCOL Te Pukenga Wairapa campus will be awarding qualifications to 189 students at next week’s graduation ceremony. The two largest cohorts include 21 students receiving a Bachelor of Nursing and 17 students receiving a New Zealand Certificate in Apiculture Level 3. The graduation ceremony will be held at 2pm next Tuesday at Rathkeale College. This will be the first graduation since UCOL Wairarapa merged with the national polytech group Te Pukenga.
New store hiring
New grocery clearance store, Reduced to Clear, is looking to hire 20 people before it opens for business on May 1. The store said it was looking for a manager, an assistant manager, and full-time, part-time and casual grocery employees, saying in the advert that jobs would have “growth opportunities”. The discount grocer will open in the Dixon St location left vacant by furniture and whiteware retailer Smith’s City, which closed last Sunday.
