meth bust
A woman is due to appear in Masterton District Court today on a charge of possession for 660 grams of methamphetamine for supply. The amount of methamphetamine seized is equivalent to about 33,000 doses and is worth about $230,000. Wairarapa Police’s precision targeting team arrested the 24-year-old woman at a gang-affiliated property in Carterton during a pre-planned search warrant yesterday. About $37,000 in cash was also seized by the police. Detective senior sergeant Philip Skoglund said removing the methamphetamine from the market may have prevented up to $730,000 worth of social harm. Further arrests in relation to the offence are likely.
Wild winds
Short but violent gusts rocked the region overnight Monday, with Castlepoint taking the top spot for the windiest place in New Zealand. Winds reached 120kmh at the coastal settlement, and multiple residents in Masterton reported fallen trees and property damage, with the airport recording wind speed of 67kmh.
Medical event
closes High St
Emergency services have corrected the record on an incident that closed Carterton’s main thoroughfare yesterday. Despite initial reporting about a car versus pedestrian, police confirmed services were responding to a medical event. It is understood a person injured themselves while getting into a car parked on the northbound side of High St in central Carterton. Emergency services responded to the incident shortly after noon, providing first aid and redirecting traffic. Wellington Free Ambulance confirmed one patient was taken to Wairarapa’s emergency department in moderate condition.
Police inquiries
Police are investigating a threatening phone call to commercial premises in Carterton. Police received a report of threats made by phone to the High St business yesterday morning shortly after 8am. Police are also following up on a theft report on Masterton’s Grey St. Police responded to the report at 4am yesterday. Initial reports were that the people involved were known to each other, and inquiries are ongoing.
